Yes I know my prompt had 'Scottish highlands', but the result catapulted me into Irish folklore, so I'll just call it artistic license and change to Ireland.
The Tuatha Dé Danann were led to the underworld of Ireland by the god of the sea, Manannán, who shielded them from the eyes of the people. Surrounded by a great mist, over time they became known as fairy-folk. Legends say at some future time of great strife, they will return to help Ireland at a time of great need. They will throng from the sídhe, racing back from the Otherworld for a marvellous battle.
In the meantime, at Samhain, when the veil is thin between worlds, they may pay ours a visit for this short period 'between' when time loses all meaning and the past, present, and future are one. It is a night of fairies, ghosts, demons, and witches. And it is only a few weeks away!
