Salamis was a nymph and the daughter of the river god Asopus.
• The encounter: Poseidon was so captivated by the river nymph’s beauty that he abducted her from her father’s side.
• The consequence: The god took the nymph to a previously nameless island, which he named the island of Salamis in honor of his beloved. Their son, Cychreus, later became the island’s first mythical king.
