A young man expresses his frustration and dejection at the failed efforts to stop a treaty between the US and Japan. The author of the song "Sukiyaki" wrote it on his way home from a protest. In Japan, the title was actually "Ue o Muite Arukō," but was changed to Sukiyaki in English speaking countries.
The song was extremely popular worldwide (one of my old favorites in the 60's). The lyrics were all in Japanese and the words were fairly generic about sadness and loss, which were well conveyed by the melody.
