Suddenly, on the path ahead and all around them, the children became aware of glowing glowering eyes watching them and there was a general feeling of aliveness about the whole forest. Strange creatures scrutinized at Arani and her friends, some curiously and some maliciously. And many creatures, including fairies, which Arani had never even thought possible to exist, began flitting about. Though the wood had always been engulfed in an eternal winter for as long as any could remember, the threesome suddenly felt a warm air swirl about them. And then, just when they thought things could not get any stranger, a woman appeared walking on the path ahead. Clad in trailing evergreen robes, her eyes were the darkest, most piercing green Arani had ever seen, and they seemed to bore onto the very souls of those they beheld. Her hair also was a magnificent red and so long that it dragged on the ground behind her, and when it was swept up in the breeze it was like windswept fire, wisps of it caressing her face. To top all of this, her whole being seemed to carry a dim majestic glow. All the forest creatures, and indeed time itself, seemed to stand still in her presence. Arani, Shaiya, and Kahle were struck speechless and their weapons fell silently to the ground.
And then she spoke...
