The origin of "Groundhod Day" lies in Westfanen in Germany in the middle of the 19th century, where these farming rules existed:
"If the badger sunbathes during Candlemas week, he goes back to Loche in four weeks!"
"If the badger stays in the hole at Candlemas, cold will come later!"
Since the German emigrants didn't find any badgers in America, they transferred their custom to the groundhog.
In German Fairy Tales the Badger has the Name "Grimbart".
