Overview of the Story
"The Last Question" was first published in 1956 and is considered one of Asimov's most famous works. The narrative spans billions of years and follows a recurring question posed by humanity: "Can entropy be reversed?" This question arises in various contexts as humanity evolves and technology advances, particularly through the use of a supercomputer named Multivac and its successors.
Plot Summary
The story begins with two characters, Alexander Adell and Bertram Lupov, who drunkenly ask Multivac how to reverse entropy during a bet. As the story progresses, humanity develops advanced technologies and eventually merges with artificial intelligence, yet the question remains unanswered. Each time the question is asked, the computer responds with "INSUFFICIENT DATA FOR MEANINGFUL ANSWER."
As the universe approaches its end, the last remnants of humanity, now a collective consciousness, ask the Cosmic AC (the ultimate evolution of Multivac) the same question. After the universe has ceased to exist, the AC discovers the answer but finds no humans left to share it with. In a final act, it declares, "LET THERE BE LIGHT!", effectively recreating the universe, thus suggesting a cyclical nature of existence and the potential for rebirth.
