Prompt: Prologue
“Will that be all, mister?” The clerk batted her spidery lashes at the man in front of the counter, his hands shoved deep in his pockets as he stared numbly at the items between them. His eyes lifted at the sound of her voice. Nodding, he turned to examine the window, which had letters plastered on its face in red and yellow, speaking of upcoming sales. The clerk put on her brightest smile, calculating the total slowly while she stole glanced at her customer. Tall and clean-shaven, quite obviously single by the rugged appearance of his hunting jacket and unkempt hair. She forced her face to stay locked in that same smile, which had never failed her before.
“Afraid you’re not gonna find deer in the woods this time of year,” she said, observing the handle of his knife, peeking out from its place in his belt, worn smooth by years of use. “But there’s plenty of game here in town.” Changing the tone of her voice as she spoke, she flitted her eyelashes flirtatiously as she touched the lid of the beer he was purchasing. His eyes followed her movement, then scanned her face. “I can imagine,” he said, his eyes never losing their intensity.
