I have no idea who wrote the original song that inspired this; it sits in some long-ago songbook that we used to sing from in 6th grade. Someone may recognize the lyrics:
Gallop my charger, gallop my beauty, speed across the sands,
Vineyards await us, rivers and palm trees, cool and grassy land,
On to desert blazing with heat, on to water sparkling and sweet.

Sunlight behind us, starlight before us, bound across the plain,
Skimming the sand dunes, leaping the hollows, fare with streaming mane,
On to midnight blacker than jet, on to mosque and tall minaret.
