More about ENDING NEGLECT

The dog belonged to somebody downstairs who was almost never home. Days passed with the same dry bowl, the same patch of dirt, the same chain dragging circles into the ground. Crows gathered on the fence like bored witnesses.

From the apartment above, the artist watched the yard through hanging plants and dirty windows streaked with rain. The dog had the look of something fading quietly.

One evening during a storm the artist went downstairs carrying a bowl of water.

The dog stiffened at first when the hand touched its face, but the touch stayed gentle. Rain tapped against the metal bowl while mud soaked into black boots. For a few moments neither of them moved.

After that, small changes began appearing panel by panel.

Fresh water. Food left beside the fence. The chain untangled from the post. The dog waiting at the gate every afternoon.

Inside the apartment sketchbooks lay open beneath yellow lamps while ink lines slowly formed the dog’s face over and over again. Long ears. Heavy eyes. Thin ribs beneath spotted fur. The drawings became more careful each night, as if attention itself could repair something.

The apartment changed too.

Wilted plants were watered. Dead leaves removed. Morning light pushed through opened curtains. Green vines spread across shelves crowded with candles, coffee cups, and scattered pens.

Eventually the dog no longer slept outside.

Now it rested indoors on a blanket while the artist sat nearby drawing in silence. The room felt warmer with another living thing breathing inside it.

Some nights the artist sat cross-legged on the floor among plants and candlelight while the dog slept peacefully nearby. Other nights the dog rested its head across the artist’s lap while pages filled with sketches.

By the final panels the apartment had become almost jungle-like with sunlight pouring across thick green leaves climbing toward the ceiling.

At sunset they climbed together onto the roof overlooking the city. The artist sat beside the dog watching the sky burn orange behind the buildings while clouds drifted like smoke across the horizon.

Nothing miraculous happened.

Nobody spoke.

The dog simply leaned closer while the last light disappeared from the city.
