Sea Elements Take It All Back
The sea came to Rome to collect its things.
First the marble.
Then the little gold fish somebody had mistaken for money.
A whale put its head through history.
It had the patient expression of someone returning a borrowed lawn mower after two thousand years.
The emperor pointed at it.
He had never pointed at anything that large without owning it.
Ships floated past the upper windows. A jellyfish tried on the sky.
I stood on the balcony holding a cup of coffee.
“Is this the end?” I asked.
The whale looked at me with an eye large enough to keep a childhood in.
Below us, the sea folded Rome very carefully.
It still had the original box.
