Soon after three teenagers awoke, the mysterious woman, the Queen of the Winter Wood, beckoned them to enter the cave with her. She led them down a long tunnel until they came to a large round room. What Arani and her friends saw astonished, entranced and enchanted them.
All over the walls were seemingly moving paintings of wonderous sights; majestic creatures like lovely horses, foxes, hares, deer, unicorns and some the children had never seen or known existed; trees with leaves shimmering emeralds through golden beams of sunlight, butterflies and birds of every color imaginable, brooks and waterfalls of clear, shimmering waters of many different shades of blues and greens and some even appeared red like wine or blood. And all the pictures on the walls seemed to be vibrantly alive, as if you could step right into their world, yet everything stayed on the walls. But there were also, fluttering around the cave, many tiny flickering lights like fireflies of many colors, which Arani assumed must be what she had seen the night before. But when she studied them closer she saw that were indeed hundreds of lovely fairies.
And at the back of the cave, on the wall, was a painting that was not moving. It was of a reared up, majestic silver horse, much like that which the Queen of the Wood rode, but this one's rider was a man, though still garbed like the Queen, in elegant, shimering, flowing green robes. The rider was holding up a poised bow and arrow, but the arrowhead appeared to be a fine emerald green, its feather tuft looked as if it were made of a blazing flame, and the wood of the bow appeared to be smooth and ornately carved.
"What is this place? Who are you?" Kahle had been the first to find his voice.
The Queen smiled serenely, her eyes shining like emeralds.
"I am Evergreen, daughter and Queen of the Winter Wood, and you are in the Cave of Eveth Eren."
And then she spoke in a beautiful and strange language, unintelligible to the three outsiders: "Tera trinin hil calahni, ve felin tera solum;
Derem qrolund tera ganem heluth miar fael, alis sariatin gora tera paraeh,
tera trinin meren wytari emelra aerginthi mael,
tera gaan rethaer ela farhul ki faraeh;
ve dael miar qylat,
alis felin tera laraeh."
Arani, Kahle and Shaiya stood once again in an entranced, wide-eyed silence, staring at the woman beside them, who now seemed to be radiating a mesmerizing glow from her body.
Finally, she repeated the saying in their own language:
"The three will come, to free the sun;
when quakes the ground beneath our feet,
and swiftly fades the past;
the three must with the emerald arrow meet, the Green Rider who holds us fast;
to seal our fate,
and free the last!"
