ArtistDuring night, in an open courtyard of an abandoned, decaying residential area of Victorian architecture, the two hemispheres of a very large Japanese suzu bell are joined by a metal hinge that is fastened to the outer lip or outer circumference of each hemisphere. The bell is hollow, and made of two halves formed by splitting the bell into two hemispheres, along the visible equator of the spherical bell. The sturdy metal hinge fastens to the outer, circular rim or “mouth” of each equatorial half. But in the center of the courtyard, the large bell is on the ground, on its side. When the two equatorial halves of the bell are joined with the metal hinge and slightly parted, the opened bell looks analogous to how a clam looks with its two shells fastened by a hinge ligament. The parted hemispheres of the bell are opened wide enough for the viewer to see one glowing blue ember floating inside, casting a piercing blue light everywhere else. The parted hemispheres are still joined by the metal hinge, which is solidly bolted to the rim of each hemisphere, which is quite visible, even behind the glowing blue ember. On the right hemisphere is the metal attachment ring for the bell, with the rope tassel still fastened to the ring, which touches the ground. In fact, the glowing blue ember is the only source of light, and it lights up the surrounding area, including the Victorian ruins, in a pale blue light. In the courtyard, there are open cracks in the ground because of a recent earthquake. The abandoned residential ruins are deserted and falling apart, revealing the underlying foundations, here and there. Surrounding the bell, there are old-fashioned apothecary bottles made of frosted glass with ground-glass stoppers littering the ground. Some of these bottles have been smashed. However, the glass stoppers that used to be in the bottles are now also littering the ground. Most of the bottles are empty, but a few still contain small quantities of a greenish-gray liquid.
A wide low-angle shot features a large, split open, bronze sphere, casting a blue light on cracked stone pavement surrounded by glass jars, in the middle of a deserted ruined street with decrepit buildings under an overcast night sky. The sphere is open in the center, and inside is a glowing floating blue sphere with a dark jagged stone in the middle. The split sphere is on the cracked pavement with grass sprouting in the cracks. A heavy rope tassel hangs off the right side of the sphere. Several glass apothecary jars are scattered on the ground around the sphere, some standing and some fallen on their sides, filled with a green liquid. The street is lined with weathered, crumbling Victorian-style multi-story buildings, their paint peeling, windows broken and boarded up, and vines creeping up the walls. The background shows more dilapidated buildings stretching into the distance under a dark, moody night sky with scattered clouds. The light emanates brightly from the sphere, illuminating the interior and casting strong shadows on the cracked ground, creating a mysterious and eerie atmosphere.
