Prometheus then stole some embers from heaven and secretly brought them to people in hollow reeds. Zeus took revenge for this outwit by having a virgin named Pandora created and with her bringing all previously unknown evil into the world. Since then, people have fallen victim to numerous plagues. Prometheus was punished even more severely: Zeus had him chained to a pillar and an eagle flew in every day to eat away his regrown liver. The hero Heracles finally freed him from the torment by killing the eagle.
