Strolling Through a Historic Alley

More about Strolling Through a Historic Alley

A watercolor painting depicts a Japanese woman seen from behind as she walks through a narrow alleyway. The woman has black hair styled in a bun with a red hair tie and is wearing a dark blue kimono with a wide olive green sash and a red undergarment. She is walking along a shallow stream of water that runs down the center of the stone-paved alley. The alley is flanked by traditional buildings with beige walls, gray tiled roofs, and light blue or gray window shutters. A vine with green leaves and small flowers climbs up the wall next to a window with overflowing flower boxes. Potted plants with red flowers sit on the ground near the wall. The style is reminiscent of early 20th-century Japanese shin-hanga prints, with soft colors and clear outlines.
