Little Pauline was home alone,
Her parents were both out.
As she skipped around the room,
With lightheartedness and singing,
Suddenly she saw before her standing
Matchsticks, lovely to look at.
"Oh," she said, "oh, how beautiful and fine!
That must be a splendid toy.
I'll light a match,
As Mother often did."
And Minz and Maunz, the cats,
Raised their paws.
They threatened with their paws:
"Father has forbidden it!
Meow! Meow! Meow! Meow!
"Leave it! Or you'll burn to a crisp!"
