Rip Van Winkle is a short story by the American writer Washington Irving (1783–1859), first published in 1819 as part of his Sketch Book. Along with "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" from the same volume, it is considered one of the first short stories in American literature and remains one of the best known. Based on the German legend "Der Ziegenhirt" (The Goatherd), it tells the story of farmer Rip Van Winkle, who, during the English colonial period, falls into a magical sleep in the mountains of New York, awakens after twenty years, and discovers that he is no longer a subject of the English king, but a citizen of the United States.
