Inspired by the German march through Brussels in August 1914 as well as my own visit to that magnificent city. The German armies that smashed through Belgium that summer constituted one of the most potent infantry forces ever assembled. Liege and Namur were taken after intense bombardment and Louvain was torched. Brussels gave no resistance and was merely occupied. The Belgians stood silent as endless greenish-grey columns marched through their city to the jaunty drum and fife tunes. One witness described the sight as "inhuman."
