ArtistOil painting of two intersecting corridors in a medieval French wine cellar. Slightly curved walls of aging brick and mortar join to form a vaulted ceilings. Horizontal oak barrels for aging wine line the walls in stout wooden frames above which are regularly spaced iron sconces with burning torches and a single baroque icon painting of the Virgin Mary. Oil on canvas in the style of Gustave Caillebotte with overtones of umber, charcoal and sienna.
The latest installment of my series based on the French Republican Calendar. Vendémiaire is the first month of the year, beginning on the fall solstice and ending 30 days later. It's the first month of the autumn quarter, followed by Brumaire and Frimaire. The name is derived from the Occitan term for wine harvesting. To contrast the design of previous calendar pages also dealing with fruit and the harvest, I went with an indoor image of a corridor in a medieval wine cellar where previous years' vintages are aged in barrels.
