The linocut shows a naturalistic close-up of an older Japanese peasant woman in simple work garb beating woven wool lying on a smooth stone surface. She is raising her right arm, in which she is holding a simple wooden hammer that she uses to beat the woolen cloth. This process will make the cloth more durable, warmer, softer and water-resistant. Behind the woman, we see the lights in the windows of the ancient village on the mountainside as night falls. The horizon is still light blue, but the blue of the sky deepens toward the top of the image. A chilly wind whisks and twirls late autumn leaves in a flurry surrounding the woman.
