Hello everyone,

We’ve heard your voices about wanting more artistic freedom, including requests to allow nude images. We’ve also received thoughtful feedback from both sides of the discussion, and we appreciate the passion and perspectives shared with us.

After thoroughly considering all the input, including a great suggestion to add a NSFW tag that would hide explicit images unless clicked, we’ve decided to stick with our current approach: Deep Dream Generator (DDG) will not allow nude or explicit content.

This decision is not about disregarding the beauty or artistry of your creations—many of the nude images we’ve seen are stunning and deserve to be showcased. However, we believe that different types of content belong on platforms suited for them. While DDG is our main focus, we also explore and enjoy other AI platforms like CivitAI, which has implemented a great NSFW system and provides tools for all kinds of content, from very safe to very explicit. NightCafe is another fantastic site, one we’ve had a friendly rivalry with since the Style Transfer days, and it too allows for some artistic nudity using a NSFW toggle.

Each platform sets its own standards for what content is allowed. After many years of developing DDG and other AI projects, we’ve decided to keep DDG as a safe space for everyone to explore their creativity, while prioritizing a cautious approach.

We acknowledge that some explicit content may occasionally bypass our moderation, often because it’s less visible or doesn’t appear on the homepage. We apologize for any inconsistency this causes. In response to your feedback, we are now exploring the option of implementing an automated moderation system to review both images and prompts before they are published. While no system is flawless, this would help us maintain more consistent standards across the platform and create a fairer experience for everyone.

The reasons behind our decision

The reasons behind our decision not to allow nude or explicit content on the platform, even when it is artistic, are as follows:

- Subjectivity of Artistic Nudity: If we were to allow artistic nudity, determining what qualifies as "artistic" versus what does not would be highly subjective. It’s not practical for us to make a judgment on each individual image. While some cases would be clear, many would be much more difficult to decide. Allowing one could open the door to allowing others, and this creates a challenge in maintaining consistent standards.

- Legal Considerations: Although much of our traffic comes from the U.S. and west Europe, our headquarters are located in Sofia, Bulgaria, where the laws surrounding explicit content are much stricter. These legal constraints are a significant factor in our decision.

With that said

With that said, we do allow certain forms of expression around nudity, particularly when it's more abstract or less explicit in nature.

Thank you for being a part of our community and for your understanding as we work to keep DDG a welcoming space for everyone. If you feel that our platform’s guidelines are too limiting and choose to transition to another platform, we fully understand and respect that decision. And should you ever decide to return to DDG in the future, you’ll be warmly welcomed back.

However, we’ve made our decision, and we are committed to moving forward with these guidelines.

Sincerely,
The DDG Team
