Doggerland was a veritable paradise for a wide variety of animals and plants for thousands of years. As the area was colder and drier, the vegetation was more like a tundra, with mosses, lichens and dwarf shrubs. The fauna was dominated by large mammals adapted to the cool climate.
Wildlife:
Woolly Mammoth: This iconic prehistoric elephant was one of the most common animals on Doggerland.
Woolly Rhinoceros: Another large mammal that was well adapted to the cold climate.
Steppe bison: A prehistoric bison species that was larger and more powerful than modern bison.
Cave lion: A large cat species that was a top predator in the area.
Reindeer: Reindeer were also common and adapted to the arctic climate.
Horses: Prehistoric horse species that were smaller than modern horses.
Plant life:
Tundra vegetation: As mentioned, tundra vegetation was dominant, with mosses, lichens and dwarf shrubs.
Birke forest: Later, when the climate became milder, birch forest spread over parts of Doggerland.
Grasses and herbs: There were also various grasses and herbs that could thrive in the open landscape.
