  • Prompt: In The City of Gold and Lead, John Christopher describes the Tripods as massive, hundred-foot-tall, three-legged machines operated by alien "Masters" to dominate Earth. They possess long metal tentacles for handling objects, move quickly, and can "surf" on water, emitting wailing sounds and using spotlights to surveil humanity. www.sffchronicles.com www.sffchronicles.com +4 Key details regarding the Tripods in this installment include: Structure: They consist of a large, hemispherical metal pod (approx. 15 meters in diameter) resting on three metal legs. Interaction: They use three metallic tentacles capable of delicate tasks, such as picking up small objects. Movement & Function: They can walk rapidly and, as revealed in this book, can travel across water by allowing their legs to function as floatation devices. The City: The City of Gold and Lead focuses on the city itself, a dome-covered, high-tech, golden city where Tripods are maintained, and the alien masters live, often described as having a pressurized, hot atmosphere. Purpose: They function as both transport and a symbol of terror, controlled by the alien Masters to keep humanity in a pre-industrial, submissive state. Skulls in the Stars Skulls in the Stars +4 They are further revealed to be part of an alien effort to prepare Earth for colonization, with the Tripods acting as extensions of the masters' power, rather than independent entities.
