Prompt: weather was so terrible that none of the crew dared to go on deck. Only the captain, a big, square fellow with nerves of steel and a rough character, stood gloomy on the foredeck. He looked with lightning eyes at the tossed waves, which prevented him from giving the signal to leave. Due to various misfortunes he had been forced to postpone the departure for several days, and now this miserable storm thwarted his plans to leave as soon as possible with his precious cargo. With clenched fists he stood there on the foredeck and cursed. Who or what dared to stop him, the most fearless and brave skipper in the world? Had he not manoeuvred his ship through the most violent storms past treacherous cliffs and sandbanks? Had he not sailed faster to the east than all the other ships of the company? Had he not proved dozens of times that no sea was too high for him and no storm too wild? He loved the dangers that came with a sailor's life and was equal to them.
