Prompt: Ravana took possession of the atmalingam (that is, the "authentic lingam") taken from Shiva, his wife, his Mind, and the gift of immortality, and then lost them because of his stupidity. It happened that Ravana's mother devotedly worshipped Shiva and constantly worshipped lingam. One day Indra stole the lingam from her, and the pious woman went on a hunger strike. Ravana came to his mother and asked her to stop starving, promising that instead of stealing, he would get her a "genuine lingam", taking it from Shiva himself. Having thus calmed his mother, he went to Mount Kailasa. Having reached the abode of Shiva, Ravana devoted himself to ascetic exploits. For ten thousand years he stood on his head in the middle of five bonfires. At the end of each millennium, he chopped off one of his heads. And when he was about to chop off the last tenth, Shiva appeared before him and asked what gifts he wanted. Ravana asked for three gifts: immortality, possession of the atmalingam and a woman to marry him of the same beauty as Uma, the spouse of Shiva, whom he happened to see once during long years of asceticism. Shiva gave him the atmalingam and also guaranteed him immortality on the condition that Ravana would never bother him again. As for the woman in the spouse, Shiva said that in all three worlds there is no beauty equal to the Mind; and then Ravana demanded his wife herself. Mahadeva expressed unwillingness to part with his wife, but Ravana threatened that he would undertake even more severe ascetic feats than he had already performed; intimidated by this promise, the Great God obeyed and gave up his wife to Ravana.

His power was such that he could sway the seas and split the mountain peaks. He flouted all laws and raped other people's wives. One day he entered Bhogavati (the capital of the snake kingdom of Patala), defeated the great serpent Vasuki and kidnapped Takshaka's beloved wife. He beat his half-brother Kubera (the god of wealth) and took away from him a self-propelled celestial chariot called Pushpaka. He devastated the celestial groves of Chitraratha and the gardens of the gods. Being as tall as a high mountain, he stopped the movement of the sun and moon with his hand and prevented their ascent."
