Prompt: For six months of the year, Proserpina ruled the Underworld, a queen of shadows and silence. The rivers of the dead whispered her name, and spirits bowed before her, their fate sealed by her judgment. Yet, even in darkness, defiance lurked. There were souls who sought to overthrow her, jealous specters who resented her power.
One winter, as the cold winds howled above, three treacherous spirits—Acris, Nivora, and Vexus—plotted against her. They whispered lies among the dead, weaving rebellion from the fabric of despair. But Proserpina, wise as the turning seasons, saw through their deceit. With a single breath, she cursed them, binding their souls to the roots of the earth.
As spring approached and the world above called to her, Proserpina walked through the veil of death and into the land of the living. Where the traitors had fallen, fragrant green leaves sprouted—mint, infused with their lingering essence.
Acris, once sharp-tongued and cruel, became peppermint, its cooling sting a reminder of biting words.
Nivora, who thrived in the cold of the Underworld, turned into spearmint, gentle yet enduring, thriving in warmth.
Vexus, the most venomous of them all, transformed into wild mint, its scent strong enough to mask poison.
Now, when Proserpina returns to Earth each spring, she walks through mint fields, breathing in the scent of her conquered enemies. And when winter comes, she vanishes once more, leaving behind only the memory of her power, carried on the wind by the leaves of the cursed plants.
And so, through the cycles of death and rebirth, the world remembers: to cross Proserpina is to be bound to the earth forever.
