19th century, Russia, a summer field. A middle-aged man dressed in 1870s urban fashion sits on the ground. The man has a distressed expression as if he is faced with something inevitable and nightmarish. Behind the man, a couple of steps away, stands a rustic old woman dressed in gray rags. She's blind, her toothless mouth curved in an unkind grin, she glares predatorily at the man as if she's not blind.
In front of the man is a pit that looks like a freshly dug grave. Black ominous fumes rise from the pit, their shape resembling mangled dead and skeletons.
The scene is suffused with a pervasive sense of doom, trapping the man in a nightmarish scenario from which there appears to be no escape.
