Prompt: In times of climate change, the anole lizards (Anolis carolinensis) living in cities in Puerto Rico look quite different than their forest-dwelling counterparts. The lizards i9n urban habitats have evolved longer limbs and more toe lamellae – the fine scales on the bottom of their feet – to allow them to scale buildings and sprint across hot surfaces. These traits are believed to help them better cling to smooth human-made surfaces like glass and metal. Behavioral or genetic changes enabling animals to adapt to climate change or, indeed, to urban habitats can happen over very short timeframes, sometimes just a few generations. Wildlife is dramatically accelerating its pace of adaptation in what is known as “contemporary evolution.” The image is an exquisitely detailed National Geographic quality close-up illustration showing three small, green anole lizards scaling a glass window on a modest high-rise building. Prompt: Animals are physiologically changing to survive living with humans. For example, among African savanna elephants (Loxodonta africana) in Gorongosa National Park, the number of elephants born without tusks has increased. Poachers are more likely to kill elephants with tusks, so that tuskless elephants survive and pass on their genes, including “tusklessness” (strong selection favoring tusklessness). In other words, being tuskless has become an evolutionary advantage for elephants in places where poachers are a major threat. Scientists have examined the impacts of ivory poaching during the Mozambican Civil War (1977 to 1992) on the evolution of African savanna elephants, and have found evidence for rapid, poaching-mediated selection for the loss of a prominent anatomical trait in the surviving 10% of a keystone species. (adapted e.g. from https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.abe7389). The image is an exquisitely detailed National Geographic quality close-up front-view illustration of a single, large, tuskless male elephant approaching the viewer. Prompt: In times of climate change, dark dragonflies have already started to evolve paler body and wing coats to absorb less solar radiation as temperatures rise. The image is an exquisitely detailed National Geographic quality close-up illustration of several pale, translucent dragonflies buzzing over a riverbank in August. The riverbank is overgrown with sparse, dry grasses that have fruited and gently swaying toward the left in the hot, tired summer breeze. Behind the vegetation, the brownish water of the river flows sluggishly. The river has only small ripples in the wind, and reflects the light blue sky perfectly where the ripples are angled to reflect the sunlight and sky. Several translucent dragonflies over the river and the riverbank are portrayed in almost microscopic detail. Prompt: Goats can adapt to extreme heat and drought through a combination of traits that allow them to conserve water, process low-quality feed, and manage high thermal loads. They use their rumen as a temporary water reservoir and can tolerate significant dehydration; they concentrate their urine and desiccate their feces to minimize moisture loss; the reduce eating during the hottest midday hours; they browse on woody shrubs, tree leaves, and thorny plants that remain accessible and nutritious during dry spells; they actively seek out natural or man-made shade structures and adjust their drinking frequency when temperatures rise; and they develop short, thick, lighter-colored hair coats with less subcutaneous fat, helping reflect solar radiation and release body heat. The image is an exquisitely detailed National Geographic quality close-up illustration of goats in a desert with dry, leafless, shrubby trees, gnawing on bark. The style is a biological illustration with extreme scientific precision, drawn as line art in bold colors.
Prompt: Giant fruit bats – aka flying foxes (Pteropus) – are not well equipped to cope with ever more frequent heatwaves. In late 2018, two days of extreme heat in the far north of Queensland wiped out one-third of Australia’s spectacled flying foxes. Flying-foxes have four strategies for thermoregulation – fanning their wings; clumping together to compete for what shade is available; licking themselves, and panting. Panting is the last resort strategy, as – like licking – it leads to dehydration. When temperatures reach 42°C and above, these strategies start to fail and animals suffer heat stroke and imminent death. That is why a some flying foxes have taken to belly-dipping, that is, skimming over the surface of rivers or pools, dipping their belly fur into the water. They then retreat to the trees to lick the cool water from their fur, lowering their core body temperature. The image is an exquisitely detailed National Geographic quality close-up illustration. Prompt: As research shows, in times of climate change, the majority of fish populations are moving nearer the north and south poles, or to deeper waters than they usually would live in. Schools of fish migrate to such cooler habitats to cope with rising sea temperatures. The relocation of habitats affects whether fish can reproduce, how much they grow, and even how well they can digest their food. As an example, Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) populations have moved roughly 73 miles toward the Arctic. The image shows a split-view of a school of Atlantic cod swimming in cool waters. The lower two-thirds of the image shows a close-up view of roughly a dozen cod, which have a heavy body, a distinct pale lateral line, a barbel (whisker-like growth) on the chin, and three separate dorsal fins. The top third of the image shows an ice floe in freezing waters, with electric-blue, clear skies above. The image is an exquisitely detailed National Geographic quality close-up illustration. The style is a biological illustration with extreme scientific precision, drawn as line art in bold colors.
Prompt: Seals (Phoca vitulina) adapt to climate change and habitat loss by extending migration distances and surviving on lower-quality food, which has a negative impact on their body condition and health, and reduces reproductive rates. Seals that normally give birth on ice are forced to give birth on land, exposing pups to land predators and cutting into pup survival rates. Seals’ current behavioral adaptations are insufficient to offset environmental stress, and long-term climate warming will continue to threaten the survival of wild seal populations. The image shows an exquisitely detailed National Geographic quality close-up illustration of a small pod of seals on a rocky shore, gathered around their pups to protect them and shelter them from the hot sun. Above, in the dunes, lurks a hungry cougar trying to spot and pick out vulnerable seal pups. The style is a biological illustration with extreme scientific precision, drawn as line art in bold colors.
Prompt: In times of climate change, monarch butterflies adapt by shifting migration timing, lingering in northern areas during extended warm autumns, or even by completely suspending migration. Moreover, As wintering climates face severe heat and habitat stress, some monarch butterflies have adapted by staying year-round rather than completing long-distance migration. This mirrors non-migratory monarch populations already established in places like New Zealand, Australia, and parts of Europe. Monarchs also shift their breeding ranges northward during summer, and broaden their range of breeding host plants, laying eggs on introduced milkweed species (such as tropical milkweed, Asclepias curassavica in Texas) rather than waiting strictly for native varieties. Moths and butterflies in general find it hard to adapt: specialist species tied to specific host plants or isolated habitat fragments often cannot shift fast enough. About 40% of species fail to adapt and experience severe population. The image shows an exquisitely detailed and strongly colored National Geographic quality close-up illustration of a kaleidoscope of monarch butterflies resting on an orange-blooming tropical milkweed. Some monarchs have their wings folded, others have them open, showing their dramatic orange-and-black coloring and veining. The style is a biological illustration with extreme scientific precision, drawn as line art in bold colors.
Prompt: Leatherback turtles (Dermochelys coriacea) find it hard to cope with climate change. They lay their eggs in beach sand, whose temperature determines whether the hatchlings are male or female. Warmer sand produces females, causing a crisis by drying out turtle eggs. The eggs that do hatch produce up to 99% females, so that the lack of male turtles makes reproduction impossible. Sea turtles must adapt by shifting nesting timing to cooler months and egg-laying to nighttime. Moreover, turtles need to expand their geographic range to higher latitudes or to more shaded, vegetation-covered beaches. Leatherbacks already dig deep nests to buffer against surface heat, and individuals that dig deeper could pass on that trait. The image shows an exquisitely detailed National Geographic quality close-up illustration of several sea turtles on a tropical shore during a full moon, climbing dunes to higher, vegetation-rich altitudes. The style is a biological illustration with extreme scientific precision, drawn as line art in bold colors.
climate change series: local mosquito populations collapse

Prompt: In times of climate change, local populations of mosquitoes can collapse for several reasons in wetlands, temporary ponds and small water bodies affected by prolonged drought and climate change. These wet areas are breeding sites for mosquitos. If the micro-habitats, breeding grounds, and food sources of mosquitoes collapse, mosquitoes cannot reproduce, and local populations of water-dependent mosquito species die out. Warmer temperatures accelerate mosquito metabolic and breeding cycles, but extreme and uncharacteristic heatwaves can push ambient temperatures past the lethal thermal limit of certain mosquito species or desiccate adult mosquitoes before they can reproduce. However, these declines in mosquito populations are local, and overall eradication of mosquitoes through natural climatic stress alone is neither feasible nor desirable, as a complete loss would trigger severe food web collapses for fish, birds, bats, and pollinators. The image shows a dramatically detailed, low-perspective, National Geographic quality illustration of piles of desiccated mosquitoes in a terrain of cracked clay that used to be a body of water. The style is a biological illustration with extreme scientific precision, drawn as line art in bold colors.
Prompt: In times of climate change, hummingbirds find it very difficult to maintain their body temperature when it is very hot during daytime. At night, when hummingbirds slip into torpor, during which their body temperature plunges by up to 75 %, the birds have a harder time saving energy during warmer nights. Warmer temperatures combined with drought or dryness reduce available ford sources to these extreme-metabolism birds, who have to feed nearly constantly. Thus, in this imaginary evolutionary scenario, hummingbirds have migrated to higher altitudes, and, as their food sources are slower to adapt, the birds have had to tap into new foods such as tree sap, insect honeydew, and overripe and damaged fruit. Moreover, hummingbirds seek out shady microsites, for instance under tree branches. Finally hummingbirds are evolving additional cooling mechanisms, such as feather loss around the eyes and feet for heat dissipation, and frequent splashing in water sources to cool off. The image shows a National Geographic quality closeup of several very brightly colored hummingbirds with smooth, iridescent feathers on their wings, bodies and tails, and fewer feathers on their normal-sized heads, splashing in a puddle. Water is spraying everywhere as they shake off glistening droplets. The style is a biological illustration with extreme scientific precision, drawn as line art in bold colors.
Prompt: In times of climate change, desert mice adapt to more severe drought periods and hotter temperatures in several ways: Physiological changes to adapt to harsh environments include bigger ears that let the desert mice get rid of excess body heat. Camouflage has given them a speckled tan-and-cream appearance. Migration to higher altitudes has taken the edge off heat exposure for parts of the desert mice populations. Finally, desert mice populations remaining in the hottest habitats have turned to digging tunnels with underground chambers in which they cluster together and enter a state of torpor with a slow metabolism during the greatest heat spells to conserve energy and reduce heat exposure. In lowering their metabolism, the mice also automatically reduce the amount of water they use, a crucial survival strategy in a food- and water-restricted environment. The image shows a cross-section of an underground chamber with a cluster of several large-eared, tan-and-cream desert mice in a state of torpor, curled up around each other in fetal positions. The style is a biological illustration with extreme scientific precision, drawn as line art in bold colors.
Prompt: In times of climate change, we can imagine very severe drought and extreme heat to have completely dried out jackrabbits food and water sources. Moreover, predators such as birds of prey have mercilessly chased jackrabbits, so that the remaining jackrabbit population has migrated hundreds of kilometers along dry riverbanks to moister river deltas in search of vegetation. Over several generations, the jackrabbits’ long legs have evolved to give them more splayed toes with webbing, allowing them to wade through viscous, thick mud to forage. The fur on their legs has all but disappeared to allow them to move more freely through their new muddy habitat, and the fur on their bodies has acquired camouflage colors that let them blend in with the greens and browns of the river deltas. Jackrabbits have evolved their ability to swim, and have become more comfortable with crossing large bodies of water to seek out new food sources and breeding grounds. The image shows a National Geographic quality closeup of a female jackrabbit accompanied by several young leverets, feeding on rich greens. Prompt: Cinematic, from left to right the stages of the evolution of man from primitive tailed monkey to ape to Homo Erectus to Neanderthal to Cro-magnon human hunter to modern office worker to Cyborg deity, background a retrofuturistic city skyline by Rudolph Zallinger, hyperreal by Bob Peak and Robert McGinnis
Prompt: Panoramic tableau depicting four archetypal male figures representing different epochs of human civilization, standing side by side as if in conversation — all four figures stand within one continuous landscape where terrain and architecture evolve progressively across the horizon. At one end of the tableau, a primal man-ape crouches beneath a prehistoric forest canopy with warm sunlight filtering through leaves, gesturing curiously toward the others. Nearby stands a rugged barbarian clad in fur and leather, muscular and intense, backdropped by crumbling stone towers of an ancient city. Slightly farther along, a robed philosopher with a serene expression gestures as if speaking, framed by white marble columns and sunlit arches of a classical metropolis. At the far end, a futuristic astronaut in a gleaming, high-tech spacesuit responds — his body posture upright and dignified — set against a gleaming skyline of Syd Mead–inspired structures: radiant spires, transparent walkways, and atmospheric towers ascending into the clouds. The four figures are not walking but interacting, as if across time, their stances and expressions suggesting recognition, tension, and shared purpose. The environment evolves gradually across the horizon: dense forest giving way to ruined stone, ruined stone giving way to marble architecture, marble architecture transforming into luminous futurist structures — all within one continuous world. The entire piece is rendered in cinematic digital oil painting with rich color depth, rich with atmospheric depth and heroic scale. Warm sunrise light washes across the entire landscape, touching forest canopy and ruins before intensifying toward the futurist skyline, illuminating the scene with warm sunrise tones. The style blends Boris Vallejo’s heroic anatomy, Frank Frazetta’s primal energy, Vermeer’s atmospheric calm, and Syd Mead’s luminous architectural futurism.
