  • Prompt: A faded letter lies unsealed, The ink is spreading through the line, A teddy bear is left behind, Where your umbrella leaned by mine.  I watch the forest-green reflection, The water swallows up the moon, The velvet plum is growing dark, And night is coming far too soon.  October, take the long way home, Beside the bench where dust has set, I keep the things you left behind, Because I cannot learn to forget.  If winter comes with heavy shadows, Maybe I can let them hide, I miss you in the handwritten page I keep so safely tucked inside.  The station lamp is burning low, A single car is standing still, I watch the bronze-leaf canopy Turn hollow on the western hill.  There is a ribbon on the pillow, A toy that sits upon the floor, I keep on reading ancient words, Though no one’s walking through the door.  October, take the long way home, Beside the bench where dust has set, I keep the things you left behind, Because I cannot learn to forget.  If winter comes with heavy shadows, Maybe I can let them hide, I miss you in the handwritten page I keep so safely tucked inside.  When spring returns to wake the garden, I’ll place the childhood toys away, But tonight I’ll hold the fraying letter, And let the plum sky turn to gray.  October, take the long way home, Beside the bench where dust has set, I’ll find your spirit in the lines, And keep the heart you left in text.
