Resilience and survival take many forms. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and complex PTSD (C-PTSD) are responses to overwhelming or prolonged trauma. PTSD is often linked to a single traumatic event, while C-PTSD typically develops from repeated or long-term trauma, especially in situations where escape was difficult or impossible, such as abuse, neglect, systemic oppression, or chronic instability. Both can affect how people experience safety, relationships, emotions, and their sense of self. Recognizing PTSD and C-PTSD as part of human diversity helps reduce stigma and honors the many ways people continue to live, adapt, and heal.
