Giedi Prime thrives on slave labour, with brutal living and working conditions for slaves who maintain households and work in factories. They WOULD live in homes/shelters and what not. But the accomidations were not most ideal... Which is why it is referred to as "the pits"...

Notable characters like Gurney Halleck and Duncan Idaho were originally slaves on Giedi Prime before being rescued by House Atreides. Which is also why they have unshakable loyalty to the Dukedom.

Imagine being on a whole planet where justice is not justifiably served.
