ArtistSamuel Palmer, Giotto: landscape with gold foil
A wide, landscape-oriented painting, inspired by Arthur Rackham, depicts a nocturnal scene with a large, textured golden moon on the left, casting a celestial glow. The moon has horizontal and circular ridges. A dark, silhouetted forest of trees with round tops and some smaller distant trees in the middle ground are positioned below the moon.
In the foreground, a large golden tree stands prominently on the left, with its leaves and branches depicted in a richly textured, almost sculpted manner. Its trunk, mostly in shadow, stretches upwards and has visible roots. Large light gray rocks are scattered around the base of the golden tree and along a winding pathway that leads into the distant hills. These rocks have a smooth, worn appearance.
The terrain consists of rolling hills and valleys covered in varying shades of dark green, brown, and golden-yellow foliage. Some hills are illuminated by the soft light, appearing lighter in color, while others are shrouded in deep shadow. In the mid-ground, a white tree stands out against the darker backdrop, its foliage appearing lighter than the surrounding vegetation, beside another golden-leaved tree. A smaller white, almost structure-like form appears on top of one of the illuminated hills in the mid-ground.
