Poem by
Thomas Hood

A little fairy comes at night,
Her eyes are blue, her hair is brown’
with silver spots upon her wings,
From the moon she flutters down.
She has a little silver wand,
And when a child goes to bed
She waves her wand from right to left
And makes a circle 'round their head,
Then they dream of pleasant things,
Of fountains filled with fairy fish,
Of trees that bear delicious fruit,
And bow their branches at a wish;
Of arbours filled with dainty scents
From lovely flowers that never fade,
Butterflies flittering in the sun,
Glow-worms golden in the shade;
Of talking birds with gifted tongues
For singing songs and telling tales,
Pretty dwarfs that show the way
Through the fairy hills and
fairy dales.

FAERIES AND MUSHROOMS

WHAT’S THE CONNECTION?
WELL, WHEN THE POEM MENTIONS…

then they dream of pleasant things…
butterflies that flitter in the sun…

THIS REMINDS ME …
THAT…

Depending upon
the
microbial and micorrhizal
community,
and a planting
of native milkweed,
the symbiotic relationship
between the plant
and the
mycorrhizal fungi
can help monarchs
self-medicate
by increasing
the cardenolides
which is a
toxic steriod
against
the debilitating
protozoan parasite
that can infect
a monarch’s offspring.

Meanwhile, just so you know, all of the fairy poems
shared were gathered (some written by me) a few years prior
to discovering Paul Stamets and his mushroom work. At the time
I was trying to connect, especially children, to nature with
a bit of fun by incorporating fairies, along with nature activities.

Then, when I discovered Paul Stamets and his work with mushrooms,
I thought in a way, I had discovered a holy grail to many of our environmental
problems, which has always been a core interest of mine.

This influence from Paul Stamets began around 2010 to the present.
However, because of one interview which I thought was not
in his usual style of being straight upfront, in fact, appeared to be
over-acting, I began to question the ground upon which he stood.

The following link I think gives a fair assessment and balance to all
in his regard, so perhaps, in the end, we may not throw out the baby
with the bathwater.
