These aliens' language cannot be reproduced by humans, so humans call them Mantodeans (Mantos for short) and their homeworld Mantodea (taxonomic Order for mantises).

Although these aliens evolved from Mantis-like forebears, that evolution has been ongoing for nearly a billion years. Needless to say, they have come a long way in that time. For example, they have retained all six limbs, but the foremost pair have evolved the capacity to act as arms, with hand-like structures. They have also undertaken numerous genetic improvement initiatives, from ancient eugenics societies to high-tech genetic engineering.

The scientists of other starfaring species would like to study the Mantos, but they have refused categorically such overtures, and they will even explode themselves rather than allow it - and self-detonation is easy, as is preventing species observation, since they are never seen publicly without their armor, which covers them completely.

The type of armor worn comes with the capabilities necessary for the practice of their profession, and the armor's style indicates their position within that profession. Other design elements indicate the wearer's placement within the complex set of sociological constructs developed by the Mantos, mostly related to extended family derived from bloodlines as well as personal affiliations with fraternal or charitable organizations, age-set groupings, honorary societies, and just about every other kind of social group you can think of and some that you can't.

In this portrait of a Manto in the armor of a military sub-commander, the armor's "horns" protect the alien's antennae, but they can also connect to automated systems, e.g., on a starship. This allows the alien to think as fast as an AI and fly ships as well as an AI does. Typically, all of the members of a ship's crew hook up to the ship during combat situations, allowing them to communicate much more quickly than the prosaic approach of speaking to each other aboard a ship's bridge.
