Their robes of indigo and dust, Stained by the earth and sky, Mark them as the keepers of trust, Where ancient secrets lie. With eyes like stars in endless night, They walk where few dare tread, Through dunes that dance with shifting light, And winds that whisper the dead. Nomads in a world of gold, They carry tales untold, Of battles fought and fortunes bold, And treasures not of silver or gold. Their faces hidden, wrapped in blue, Their souls as deep as sand, They speak of things both old and new, In tongues that few understand. The desert is their endless sea, Its waves of heat their kin, And in its heart, they wander free, Bound only by the wind. O Blue Men of the Sahara’s span, In you, the desert’s soul does stand, A mystery, an ancient clan, The last true kings of shifting sand.
The Tuareg - better known as the Blue Men of the Sahara, because they traditionally wear the indigo tagelmust, or turban, which stains the skin blue.There are about one million Tuareg living in Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Algeria and Libya. Fiercely independent they are loyal to their tribe rather than any recognised government. They have a saying, “Never refuse to allow someone’s camel to drink from your well; you never know when your camel may need to drink from their well.”
