A yellow bird is at the window, A single petal falls in gold, The river turns a deeper violet, And everything we touched grows cold. I watch your coat against the water, A golden shape against the dark, The platform bench is wet with rain, And night has left its silver mark. October, take the long way home, Beneath the streetlights turning blue, The station wires are humming low, A song that always ends with you. If winter comes with frost and silence, Maybe I can let it stay, I miss you in the yellow leaves The river carries far away. The book is open on the table, The pages curl beneath the steam, I watch the train lights blur and fade Like fragments of a broken dream. There is a shadow by the curtain, A face that watches through the pane, I keep two cups upon the shelf, Though only one will catch the rain. October, take the long way home, Beneath the streetlights turning blue, The station wires are humming low, A song that always ends with you. If winter comes with frost and silence, Maybe I can let it stay, I miss you in the yellow leaves The river carries far away. When summer comes, I’ll close the ledger, And let the pages drift apart, But tonight the violet sky is long, And gold is heavy on my heart. October, take the long way home, Beneath the streetlights turning blue, I’ll let the final train go past, And keep the quiet half of you.
