As the name has it, these craft are used to carry, for example, heavy equipment, or boulders taken as geological samples.
Their design allows for the transport of heavy objects without taking them aboard a vessel and thereby destabilizing the vessel. Moreover, the objects are easily dumped during emergencies, which isn't possible when an object is the hold of a vessel.
