Just before I fell asleep and had this dream I read the story of the Mojave (Mohave) Indian dream-cycle hero Atahana (Ata Hana) in The Inland Whale, written by Theodora Kroeber, the mother of Ursula K. Le Guin.
I was in a restroom where there were people whose skin resembled Indian blanket designs, but the colours were pastel blue, sky blue, and pink. They spoke in a strange language, yet I could speak it too. I jabbered with them for a while, then went outside.
Outside there were street people. They showed me what they would do to me if they caught me outside—they would remove my skull and preserve it.
I went back inside and noticed it was a bar. Standing near the door, I looked back at the people inside. As I watched, they regressed through time by about one hundred years. It seemed as though the same people were living through the same feuds over and over again across a century.
There was another door with a bell beside it. To be admitted, you had to ring the bell three and a half times. Beyond that door was another bar, this one filled with middle-class people.
I continued walking until I reached a wealthy neighbourhood. A rich man drove past in a convertible Cadillac with sandstone glued to its sides.
Eventually I arrived at Sutter Junior High. Inside the gymnasium were banks of computers. I looked at a viewing screen and saw three green squares nested inward against a dark background.
Then a voice spoke:
“Technology is in control of the world.”
