ArtistThe winter will be big, the late 13th and early 14th century, in style of Duccio di Buoninsegna.
A folk art painting depicts a snow-covered landscape with various scenes of people in winter. In the upper left, two figures wearing cloaks climb a snowy hill with a bare tree. Further right, a village with snow-covered thatched roofs and wooden buildings is visible, including a prominent church with a bell tower. Snowflakes in the shape of small white four-petal flowers fall throughout the scene. In the mid-ground, a group of people is gathered. To the left, a figure carrying a large bundle of sticks on their back walks next to a donkey. Nearby, several people gather around a crackling bonfire by a frozen stream, warming themselves. To the right, the Virgin Mary, with a halo and dressed in blue and red robes, holds the infant Jesus, who also has a halo. Joseph, a bearded man in a brown hooded robe, stands beside them, holding a staff. In the foreground, two children are ice skating on the frozen stream, one in an orange tunic and the other in a yellow tunic and red hat. The entire painting has a textured, golden background, giving it a rich, antique appearance.
