Artist16:9, 64K, VAC1.2 PURE HORROR PHOTOGRAPH. Derelict Victorian mansion being renovated on a stormy October afternoon fading into night. Two adult renovators have removed old wallpaper and discovered a narrow sealed doorway that does not appear on the building plans. Camera peers over their shoulders into a tiny forgotten nursery illuminated by one work lamp. Dust-covered toys, iron crib and faded wallpaper appear untouched for more than a century. The crib is empty. However, covering the ceiling directly above the adults is an enormous pale humanlike creature folded impossibly flat against the plaster, limbs extending into all four corners like a spider, its long hair hanging downward. Its face is inverted and positioned inches above them, eyes closed—as though asleep. One eye has just begun opening. Severe single-source work-light tenebrism, dust particles, peeling paint, damp plaster, authentic architectural decay, 24mm claustrophobic lens distortion. No gore. The viewer sees the danger before the characters do.
As autumn dies and the nights lengthen, darkness returns to places we have spent the year pretending were empty.
Beyond the firelight, ancient things are waking—things that remember when the night belonged entirely to them.
So keep the candles burning, lock the doors, and never mistake what you cannot see for something that isn't there. - Adrian Keeley
