Inspired byThe painting depicts a gang of boatmen during the transportation of a barge. The group consists of eleven figures moving from the depths of the canvas from right to left, so that the leftmost of them are closest to the viewer. The boatmen are lined up along the same line, forming a small angle with the horizontal — as a result, almost all the figures are located on the same plane, as on a bas-relief, in accordance with the principles of classicism, which was an important part of academic education. Such a construction, on the one hand, allows you to convey the difficulty of movement and the severity of the work, and on the other — to reveal the inner world of individual boatmen and show the "complex unity" of their totality as a whole. The monumentality of the boatmen's figures is emphasized by the relatively low horizon line
A painting showcasing boatmen moving a barge, with 11 figures in a line, conveying both the physical strain of their work and their individuality, following classicism principles with a low horizon adding to the monumental feel.
