Yes, this is my safehouse. And I intend to stay here more often, with comments turned off.
Why?
I have always been writing in so many languages, just to favour everyone, constantly translating and retranslating. In doing so, I make myself vulnerable. I make mistakes in languages that are not my own, and translators like DeepL or Google also make mistakes when they misread idiom. At the same time, it is impossible to run every sentence, every word through a translator — it would cost me even more time than it already did.
I never intend to make anyone feel uncomfortable. Yet it can happen. It has happened. (No wonder, if you try to communicate that much.) And then it is taken very badly, instead of there being empathy for a non‑native speaker of any language who cannot know every nuance and every cultural difference. That is not a matter of communication technique, which requires awareness; it is simply the reality of being unaware of making a mistake. It has caused me pain.
All my energy has gone into translating, giving all I had — endlessly. It has mentally broken me. I am still recovering.
From now on, I will write my texts more often in Dutch. My language has the right to exist as well. It’s a small effort to translate once in a while too, isn’t it?
