At some point in my life I heard the phrase, "the silence was deafening." It stuck in my head. Piqued curiosity. Likely because of the cognitive dissonance that the phrase implies. However, a few years ago I actually experienced this. Not in a metaphorical way, but in a literal way. I was out in a field, miles from another human. The wind and everything died down. It became silent. It became so silent, that it seemed to be actually physically hurting my ears. Prior to this, I thought it was just a reference to awkward silence in tense social situations. Now, I'm not certain that is where it's origin lies.
