Jesus is the vine, the true source of life for us believers. We are branches connected to Him, drawing that life from Him as branches draw the necessary nutrients to survive and flourish. At first glance, we may assume that branches bear fruit, but in another sense, it's really the vine that makes it all happen.
How is Jesus the true vine?
In the Old Testament, the nation of Israel was a vine planted by God Himself. But, because of unfruitfulness, that vine was burned with fire and cut down. The Lord Jesus Christ is the very vine because he is very Israel,18 and the branches of the very vine are those “in Christ” who are “fruitful in every good work.”
