A gorilla is a robust and powerful great ape belonging to the Hominid family. It lives in the forests of Central and West Africa and is the largest living primate, with males weighing up to 200 kilograms and standing over 1.80 meters tall. Their fur is thick and black or brown in color, and their arms and legs are muscular. The gorilla has a broad chest, flat face, brown eyes and wide nostrils.
Gorillas are social animals that live in family groups led by a dominant male, called silver because of the silver fur on his back. Females and their young live together and are protected by the dominant male. Gorillas are primarily herbivores, eating leaves, fruits and stems. They have high intelligence and are able to use tools, communicate with visual and auditory signals and build nests to sleep at night.
Unfortunately, gorillas are an extremely endangered species because their natural habitat has been destroyed and their meat, skin and body parts are stolen for traditional medicine. Efforts are being made to protect these majestic animals and their habitats through, for example, national parks and nature reserves.
