A striking graphic novel illustration in detailed pencil drawing and black ink, a close-up portrait of a young woman with short vivid red hair, wearing an improvised roughly stitched dress made from dirty torn linen. She stands before an overgrown ancient stone archway draped in thick ivy and moss. Dramatic chiaroscuro lighting, heavy cross-hatching, intricate shading, sharp ink outlines, high contrast, quiet melancholic mood, comic book art style
CHAPTER EIGHT
The stones were not broken; they were overgrown. That was the first thing she noticed as she crossed the village's outer ring. There were no charred beams on the thresholds, nor broken household goods in the square. The doors still hanging on their hinges had been pulled shut. Carefully, it seemed. It was not a place that had been destroyed, but a place that had slowly been abandoned.
She reached out toward a stone archway draped in thick strands of ivy. When her fingers touched the moss, she felt no alarm, no old pain rising from the earth. Only peace. Generations of these people had lived here, raised their children, and then slowly faded away. House after house, family after family, until no one was left to pull the final door shut behind them. Why would you leave a place where the grass grows so willingly? She had no answer.
Her memory offered no images, as usual. Only the vague realization that people—or whatever these beings were—rarely gave up a good place without a reason.
