Colloquially, the phrase means "to give others an insight into intimate domestic and other areas".
The sewing box, the (older) sewing basket and the sewing table (for the better-off) were objects in the household that were reserved for the special use of the housewife. When women sewed together, intimacies were often exchanged. The sewing box was also often used as a hiding place when something had to be concealed from the eyes of the strict husband. In Fontane's novel "Effi Briest" (1895), Mr von Instetten accidentally comes across the compromising letters from Major Crampas to his wife, which had been lying "at the very bottom" in a compartment of their sewing table.
