After his imprisonment, Dantès' appearance changes significantly. He becomes pale and thin, with sunken cheeks and hollow eyes that are "deeply set in their sockets." He has a thick beard and long, matted hair that "hung down in heavy masses." His once-youthful face is now "lined and furrowed" with the hardships of his imprisonment, and he looks much older than his years. Later in the novel, after he has escaped from prison and acquired his wealth, Dantès transforms his appearance again. He takes on the identity of the Count of Monte Cristo and adopts a new, refined look. He wears expensive clothes and jewelry, and his hair and beard are trimmed and styled. His eyes, which were once dark and intense, now have a "melancholy and thoughtful" look to them.
