  • Prompt: As we climbed the steep path that wound its way up the hill, I caught a glimpse of the abbey. I was not impressed by the walls that surrounded it, similar to others I had seen throughout Christendom, but by the stone of what I later learned was the Building. It was an octagonal construction that from a distance looked like a tetragon (a very perfect figure that expresses the solidity and impregnability of the City of God), whose southern flanks rose above the plateau of the abbey, while the southern ones seemed coming out of the very skirt of the mountain, in which they fit like a sword. I mean that in some places, from below, it seemed that the rock stretched up to the sky, without change of color or matter, and became to a certain extent a hinge and a tower (the work of giants who were very familiar with the earth and with the sky). Three orders of windows preached the Trinitarian rhythm of ascension, so that what was physically square on earth was spiritually triangular in heaven. When approaching it, one realized that the quadrangular shape generated, in each of the angles, a heptagonal tower, five of whose sides projected outwards; that is to say that four of the eight sides of the major octagon gave birth to four minor heptagons which from the outside appeared as pentagons. Admirable harmony of so many holy numbers, each of which revealed a very subtle spiritual sense.
