The dancing plague of 1518, also known as the Straßburger Tanzwut, was a mass psychogenic illness that struck the city of Strasbourg in July of 1518.
City authorities initially worsened the crisis by hiring musicians and building stages, believing the dancers needed to "dance it out," which only fueled the frenzy.
