The idea that Jesus is the last Pope, or that the last Pope will be named Peter the Roman, comes from a prophecy attributed to St. Malachy. This prophecy, which is considered by many scholars to be a forgery, predicts the names and symbolic descriptions of future popes. The final pope, "Petrus Romanus," is described as leading the church through great tribulation, after which the city of seven hills (Rome) is destroyed and a dreadful judge (likely Jesus) will come.
